Remember large equipment like semis need to make very wide turns, so give plenty of space at intersections as well. Heavy equipment (like tractors semis) take a lot longer to stop than a standard daily driver, so if you pass heavy equipment make sure there is plenty of space and avoid sudden stops. 170 ground miles from the farm, and those that cross state lines and travel greater that 150 air miles or 170 ground miles from the farm. This publication discusses driver, truck, trailer, implements of agriculture, weights and dimensions, securing loads, license plates, fuel, fertilizer, permits and registration regulations. These regulations change often, so keeping updated copies of this publication or checking regulations frequently will be important. Basic road safely is similar no matter what equipment is being used. Avoid moving equipment at dusk or dawn, but if there is no other option, make sure flashing lights are working If traveling less than 25 mph, have a slow moving sign or an escort with flashers, stay off the roads during peak travel times, pull over and let vehicles pass if more than three vehicles are behind you, and follow all other laws related to moving equipment on roadways.
In Knox County, farmers have to drive implements down the road, or they own semis that travel on the roads to get to different fields or to haul grain to the elevators to sell. Maintenance or fixing this equipment can be stressful enough, but understanding transportation laws can be even more stressful. Reading and understanding Indiana codes can be a daunting task, especially if you are not familiar with it. To help farmers understand these complex codes, Purdue just released a new publication that breaks this information down into four types of carriers. Those include equipment that never crosses state lines and never travels on interstates, never crosses state lines but does travel on interstates, crosses state lines but remains within 150 air miles or Hoosier Uplands sponsors projects in five counties BY VALERIE CLINGERMAN PURDUE EXTENSION-KNOX COUNTY With the amount of rain that we have received so far this spring, many may be noticing wet spots or low spots in your lawns or landscapes.
Right now the grass or other plants in these wet areas may be yellowing or dying because they do not do well in these extremely moist conditions. But wait, there may be an option for you to reduce these wet spots and have it look nice even during wet times. One viable option is to install a rain garden. A rain garden is a landscaped area planted with native perennial plants that don't mind having "wet feet." (You can see examples of rain gardens at the Knox County Fairgrounds and at the Knox County Public Library). Rain gardens also add benefits by filtering storm water before it enters waterways, reducing flooding, providing habitat food for wildlife and enhancing beauty of lawns.
When installing a rain garden, make sure to understand the drainage pattern of your lawn. Keep them at least 10 feet from buildings, do not put them on drain fields of septic systems, do not place rain gardens where the water collects but put them upslope of these areas. Sunny or partly sunny areas are preferred, check to make sure underground service lines or utilities are not where you plan to dig and check with the Area Plan Commission or other building department to make sure the installation requirements do not conflict with local zoning or ordinances. The size and depth of your garden will depend on the amount of runoff running to the garden and soil type. There are tables available to help with this decision.
The ideal depth is usually between 4 and 8 inches. Rain water will also need to be directed toward your rain garden using PVC pipe, rock-lined channels or any other way that works for you. You can also make rain gardens different shapes, but general rules of thumb are that the garden should be twice as long as wide and the longer side of the garden should be perpendicular to the flow of water so it will intercept the most water. Some plants that work well in rain gardens include columbine, swamp milkweed, various asters, purple coneflower, blue flag iris, bee balm, various ferns, ironweed and Joe-Pye Weed. Columbus hospital will open new ER BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS COLUMBUS Columbus Regional Hospital is wrapping up an expansion project that was delayed for several years after flash flooding in 2008 caused nearly $180 million in damage. The hospital's new emergency department is scheduled to open Wednesday on the southeast side of the hospital's main building, The Republic reported.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held last Tuesday for the facility. Jim Bickel, the hospital's president and CEO, said last week during a preview tour for city leaders and the media that the opening marks years of planning and hard work that date back to 2007, when plans were formed for the new facility. The project was put on hold in 2008 as money earmarked for a down payment on the renovation had to be used to pay hospital employees during the five months the facility was closed for flood damage repairs. The hospital relaunched the plans for the new department in 2013 and construction began in 2014. The new department is twice the size and designed to handle twice as many patients as the previous emergency room unit.
Hospital officials expect the new facility's opening to address the waiting issue in the overcrowded former emergency department. to the businesses and we're waiting to hear from them on what they might like to have done to their buildings. The city of Mitchell has been very cooperative." Part of that could include the restoration of the mural on the northwestern corner of Sixth and Main streets. But the work won't end there. The organization is working on filling out the 3.5-acre plot on Frank Street where the trailer park once stood.
The community garden is taking up some space on the east end, but a shelter house, playground, basketball court and soccer field will eventually consume the rest of the area. The shelter house and playground should be ready for use by the Fourth of July "Our focus is on handicap accessibility," Miller said. "The playground will be as handicap-accessible as possible, and the sidewalks are to provide access to the in Shoals. It offered to replace windows, doors and awnings and paint buildings to spruce things up in the downtown area. "We might buy a blighted house and tear it down, or in Orleans, for example, we're working with the town to do some sidewalks," Miller said.
"In Salem, we are looking at possibly adding a playground. We like to go from town to town and do projects along those lines. In recent years, we've put a lot of money into Paoli and Bedford, so right now, we're focusing on the smaller communities we serve." In Mitchell, that means downtown building owners will get some help rehabilitating their structures. Miller said that could mean replacing windows, doors or just exterior painting. "It's nothing major, but we do want to partner with our downtown business owners to perhaps do things they could use help doing," Miller said.
"Right now, we've put the idea out MITCHELL A little paint here. A playground over there. Add in a new basketball court, shelter house and a few hundred feet of sidewalks. David Miller, chief executive officer of Hoosier Uplands, says it isn't much, but he believes those smaller projects can create a lot of community pride. About four years ago, Hoosier Uplands instituted what it calls a community development and improvement program.
The idea is to put money aside to do smaller projects within the communities the nonprofit serves in Lawrence, Martin, Orange, Crawford and Washington counties. The first project was the razing of a blighted trailer court on Mitchell's east side. Hoosier Uplands bought the property, took out all the trailers and cleaned up the 3. 5-acre tract. The next year, the organization did a facade improvement project.
